Rendezvous with Rama - Commander Norton's Suit
2019
My Final Major project in my 3rd year studying Design for Theatre, Film and Performance
Rendezvous with Rama is set in a future where space travel is commonplace, with humans having spread out across the solar system. One of the most important and human pieces of technology in this future is the space suit.
My suit design looks at modern day ideas about space travel, while also keeping its roots in the themes and styles of 60s and 70s technology, giving a retrofuturistic feel.
I imagined that a world where everyone has a space suit, there would be different types to better fit the intended use - consumer versions would be different from industrial versions.
In the script version of the book Norton and his crew are effectively space miners, working to bring asteroids into a safe orbit for later mining, so I created an industrial, tough looking suit to fit. Perhaps it's not the sleekest in the solar system but it keeps the wearer safe and allows them to use the various tools required for coupling space rocks to their ship.
